CHARACTER
Character Name: Kylo Ren
Character Age: 29
Canon: Star Wars
Canon Point: Just before confronting his father on the bridge.
History: Here!
Personality: The first thing to understand about Kylo Ren is that while he is a villain, he doesn't necessarily see himself that way. He's a man who will do anything to achieve the goals he's set out for himself. He's been blinded by his devotion to Supreme Leader Snoke, seeing him as the master who will help him reach his full potential. It makes him unpredictable and temperamental, a wild card that gets called upon to wreak havoc whenever he's sent forth to do a task set out by his dark master.

But to understand where he is now, one must understand where he came from. Kylo adored his family, but it was impossible for them to live up to his standards. They were the heroes of the galaxy, but he had to witness firsthand that they were also mortal, and therefore prone to flaws. This can be seen when he tells Rey that Han "would have disappointed" her, implying the same thing had happened to him. Because he couldn't rely on idolizing his parents, he turned to the figure of his grandfather, someone that could never let him down. The myth and legend of Darth Vader overshadowed the actual personality of the man and so he became the only figure that Kylo saw he could rely on.

He turned to the Dark Side wholeheartedly, but it wasn't a smooth transition. Even in present day, he feels the call to the Light trying to pull him back and telling him to do good. He sees this as a weakness to be overcome, but even when he reaches the irredeemable act of killing his father, it doesn't go as he plans. He's conflicted as he realizes he hasn't achieved his goal of purging himself of the Light and looks unsure. The novelization of the movie goes so far as to say he realizes that killing Han weakened him and he realizes his victory over the light was hollow.

He's also got a very unstable mind. He speaks to his grandfather's melted helmet as if he's actually there. While he tries to keep his composure, by the time the end of the films rolls around, he's screaming at his opponents and seems on the verge of a complete breakdown after killing his father. Only his determination and will to keep going are what is keeping him together at this point. Indeed, these are some of the only good qualities seen in him. His fanatical devotion to his cause, his stubborn nature, his willfulness, they all are what spurn Kylo to keep going on.

If there's one Dark Side trait Kylo has fully immersed himself in, it's anger. Despite being a full-fledged adult, Kylo has an extremely childish side to his personality. When things don't go his way, he throws temper tantrums like a young child would, destroying anything in range with his lightsaber or choking one of his subordinates for bringing him bad news. In addition, he yells out that his grandfather's lightsaber belongs to him when Finn is using it, sounding rather like a child who wants a toy that someone else has. He comes across as never having fully matured, instead developing into a bit of a spoiled brat through being Snoke's favorite.

As far as this has affected the rest of his personality, it has made him easy to manipulate. Snoke has been his master for many years, and whatever he says, Kylo does so without questioning. By the same token, when Han tries to convince him to turn back to the Light, he honestly listens and the conflict within him grows. Whoever Kylo is listening to, they're the ones in charge. Thinking for himself is a rarity, and when he does, it tends to backfire on himself, such as when he decides to take Rey captive instead of continuing to try and find BB-8.

Inventory: -One set of clothing, including helmet with vocoder inside.
-One lightsaber that will probably blow up eventually.

Abilities: Kylo has been trained in both the Light and Dark Side of the Force, which has given him many powers. Among these are:
-Telekinesis. He's skilled enough to stop a blaster bolt being shot at him in midair and hold onto it for minutes on end. He's also strong enough to yank a full-grown man across a room, through the air, and into his hand.
-Telepathy. He can go into someone's mind, looking at their thoughts and memories. He can also use this to push a state of unconsciousness onto someone. Stronger individuals in the Force can keep him out or even turn the tables on him. Even though it's not shown, presumably he can do the mind trick as well.
-Lightsaber skills. He's been practicing with a lightsaber for most of his life and is a powerful opponent in combat. His style tends to make use of his height and strength, slamming his lightsaber into his opponents from an upper position, and twirling it to make the force behind the attacks even stronger.
- Dark Side general toughness. The man took, in no short order, a bowcaster wound to his side (which had been shown to blast holes in previous opponents and send them flying), a wound to one shoulder, a stab wound to his leg, another shoulder wound to his other side, and finally only went down after Rey slashed up his face and he basically collapsed. Once he starts fighting, it's hard to get him to go down.

Flaws: As shown by his entire personality section, Kylo Ren is a very bad man, despite what he may think about himself. He rejected a family that loved him purely for the sake of power. He murdered his uncle's entire school of Jedi in training, some of which are implied to have been children. He has torn into people's heads with his mental powers, torturing them to find out information. Anyone who stands in his way is swiftly removed, usually through killing them. Though he has yet to reach the canon point I'm taking him from, he murdered his father, who wanted nothing more than for his son to come home with him so they could be a family together again. The worst part is, with the exception of his murder of Han, Kylo has felt very little remorse for any of these actions. He sees himself as a zealot, someone with a purpose that must be fulfilled, and he'll do anything it takes to get there. Indeed, he seeks to remain firmly entrenched on the Dark Side of the Force, despite knowing that the Dark Side has been responsible for so much unhappiness both in the galaxy at large and in his own family personally.
